The first courses in veterinary medicine at the University of Minnesota were offered to agriculture students in 1888 by Dr. Michael Treacy on the topics of physiology, anatomy and animal hygiene. In 1891, the University established a College of Veterinary Medicine, but it folded after one year due to poor planning and lack of interest. Benjamin Sherwood Pomeroy was born in 1911 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned a M.S. degree from Cornell University and a doctor of veterinary medicine degree from Iowa State University. He started his career at the University of Minnesota as a veterinary diagnostician in the Extension Division in 1934 where he became interested in avian diseases.
